Philip Rivers hails ‘unbelievable’ NFL atmosphere at Wembley Stadium as Chargers defeat the Titans in London

LA Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers praised the “unbelievable” atmosphere at Wembley Stadium after his side left their attendance woes behind in California to earn victory in front of nearly 85,000 fans .

Since relocating from San Diego to Los Angeles last year, the Chargers have struggled to fill their StubHub Center stadium, despite it being the smallest in the league. Last season, their average home attendance was 25,336 — less than half that of the second smallest crowd, the Cincinnati Bengals.

Rivers, who threw for two touchdowns in the 20-19 win over the Tennessee Titans, said: “It was awesome and they got to see a heck of a game.

“The atmosphere was unbelievable and it seemed like a pro-Charger crowd.”

The Chargers have an agreement in place to share the new LA Stadium with the city’s other side, the Rams, when it opens in 2020, but their difficulty in attracting fans has placed them among the main contenders for relocation should the NFL give the green light to a permanent London franchise.

However, there was another reminder of the potential problems facing a transatlantic team, when the Chargers’ star running back Melvin Gordon was ruled out of the game with a tight hamstring that was reportedly aggravated on the flight over.
