Philip Schofield’s best presenter nomination at the National Television Awards remains intact despite his affair confession.

Voting for the coveted award remains open with Schofield still a top contender for the gong after a week during which he admitted having an affair with a much younger ITV colleague.

Manchester-based comedian Mark Grimshaw pointed out the blunder on Twitter where he started a talking point with his followers.

He wrote: "Just throwing it out there that voting is currently open on the National TV Awards, and Phillip Schofield is still nominated for best presenter, if anyone wants to help the funniest possible outcome happen in September."

Schofield, 61, faced a backlash from fans this week when it was revealed he had embarked upon an affair with the employee prior to coming out as gay publicly and while still married to his wife of 30 years Stephanie Lowe.

A statement from Schofield saw him describe the relationship as "unwise, but not illegal” as he officially stepped back from all of his ITV presenting roles just days after quitting This Morning.

The veteran broadcaster had previously announced he was stepping down from presenting the ITV talk show with "immediate effect" after more than 20 years on the programme.

Holly Willoughby, who has hosted alongside Schofield since 2009, will remain on the show but has taken early half-term holiday leave, with Alison Hammond and Dermot O'Leary continuing to fill-in for the pair on Tuesday.

Days after his exit, it was announced both Schofield and Willoughby were among 50 names long-listed for the NTA presenter prize, alongside their fellow This Morning presenters Hammond, O'Leary and Rylan Clark.

They are joined in the category by NTA powerhouses Anthony McPartlin and Declan Donnelly, who took home the award for the 21st year in a row during last year's ceremony.

This Morning has also been long-listed in the daytime category after winning the award last year, competing alongside shows including Good Morning Britain, Loose Women and Lorraine.

The NTA long-list also saw Dame Deborah James and Paul O'Grady posthumously recognised.
