A growing thirst for tequila from New York to Tokyo has turned sales of the liquor into a multibillion-dollar industry, but its production remains rooted in centuries-old methods of farming using hand tools and packs of mules, Reuters reports.

According to Statista, in 2017 Mexico exported more than 17 billion liters of tequila to the U.S.
