Photos of the hotel room where Liam Payne was staying have been published and show a smashed TV. Clarin, an Argentinian national newspaper, released further images showing remnants of a burnt candle and pieces of aluminium foil strewn across a desk.

This was alongside what seems to be the charred remains of a soda can top. Labour Party government Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson has described the death of Liam Payne as “very sad news” in a statement on Thursday (October 17).

She told Sky News on Thursday morning: “It’s very sad news, it’s no age for someone to lose their life, and my thoughts are with his friends and family, this must be a total shock for them and very, very upsetting.”

She said of his friends and family that “my thoughts are with them at what must be a really difficult time”. Former One Direction hairstylist Lou Teasdale posted a message on X following the death of Liam, who hailed from Wolverhampton.

She wrote: “Sending you all so much love to you all” alongside an emoji of a broken heart. A message posted on Amazon Music’s X account said: “We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Liam Payne. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all those who love his music.”

The post included a black and white image of the former One Direction star. The Foreign Office has confirmed it is contact with local authorities in Argentina “regarding reports of the death of a British man”.

A spokesperson for the FCDO declined to comment any further, including on the identity of the man involved.
