When we first met Malia Obama, she was an adorable tween, twirling around in age-appropriate dresses. Now, the 17-year-old is heading to Harvard — in the fall of 2017 — and we can’t help but get a little misty eyed at the thought. As the elder Obama daughter prepares to embark on the first leg of her young adult life, we would be remiss, as former college students ourselves, not to help a girl — and others heading to school — out and make sure they’re 100 percent prepared to head to campus in style. From comfy sweatpants to sturdy headphones (for all-nighters in the library), here are a few things we think Malia Obama and her freshman cohorts will need to get through her first year in college.
