JFK's last day - The assassination of an American President

The day began as a normal one might for the President of the United States. After speaking briefly outside the Hotel Texas in Fort Worth, President John F. Kennedy and First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy returned inside the hotel where they were staying, joined Vice President Lyndon Johnson and his wife, Lady Bird, and sat for a Chamber of Commerce breakfast. Their entourage took a flight on to Dallas, where Gov. John Connally and wife Nellie would wait for the Kennedys to arrive in a convertible limousine.
The President and First Lady later boarded that limousine for a 10-mile ride through Dallas, en route to a luncheon speaking engagement. That journey would be the end of normality for that day, and in some ways forever, because it was November 22, 1963.

The procession made its way through streets crowded with spectators and turned off Main Street at Dealey Plaza at 12:30 in the afternoon. Passing the Texas School Book Depository, gunfire tore the quiet and the President of the United States was hit in the neck and head. Connally was struck in the chest.

Secret Service and presidential staff rushed Kennedy to Parkland Memorial Hospital but he couldn't be saved, and died at one o'clock.

Lee Harvey Oswald was taken in to custody and at 2:38pm on Air Force One, with President Kennedy's body on board, Lyndon Baines Johnson was sworn in as the 36th President of the United States.
