    Daphne Caruana Galizia, Malta's best-known investigative journalist, was killed on Monday when a powerful bomb blew up her car, police said, in a case that stunned the small Mediterranean island. Caruana Galizia, 53, ran a hugely popular blog in which she relentlessly highlighted cases of alleged high-level corruption targeting politicians from across party lines. Locals said Caruana Galizia had just left her house and was on a road near the village of Bidnija in northern Malta when the bomb detonated, sending her car flying into an adjacent field.

    Monarch repatriation over but thousands still stranded

    More than 80,000 Monarch passengers have been brought home to the UK after the airline's collapse - but thousands apparently remain stranded with the repatriation programme now closed. The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) chartered flights for a two-week period in a £60m operation after the carrier went into administration, to cover the return trips. The CAA said around 1,000 still abroad whose flights were covered by the industry's ATOL guarantee will be contacted to arrange alternatives.

    Mercedes-Benz has announced a recall of 400,000 cars in the UK over fears airbags could deploy in error. The company's statement said it would be contacting the owners of the models affected shortly, but urged drivers not to use their vehicles as a precaution if the airbag warning light was lit in red on the dashboard. Mercedes said: "If the steering column module clock spring is broken, the driver airbag warning light will be displayed in the instrument cluster, as well as a red airbag warning lamp.

The club said they were willing to listen to offers that would be capable of "delivering sustained investment" towards achieving their ambitions in the top flight.

    Lloyds Banking Group has rejected a last-ditch bid to settle a legal claim over the disastrous merger that created Britain’s biggest high street lender, days before a trial featuring some of the country's most prominent financiers is due to begin. Sky News has learnt that the Lloyds Shareholder Action Group (LSAG) last week told the bank that it would abandon its claim in exchange for a payment of roughly £500m, according to insiders. Sources close to Lloyds said on Monday that the offer from Harcus Sinclair, the law firm acting for the claimant group of 6,000 former Lloyds TSB investors, was immediately rejected by the bank.
