NASA has said 'Merry Christmas' with this festive picture of a a nearby planetary nebula NGC 5189. Scientists used the Hubble space telescope to take the image that looks like a Christmas-tree ornament with a glowing ribbon inside. Planetary nebulae are huge clouds of gas in space - the final stage of life in a medium-sized star like our Sun.

An archaeological dig in the village of Onavas in Mexico unearthed alien-like skulls. The excavated burial site contained 25 individuals, 13 with elongated skulls reminiscent of the monster from Ridley Scott's Alien. South American cultures such as the Maya and Inca practiced cranial deformation by binding the heads of babies. The remains are 1,000 years old (Image: INAH)

The US President Barack Obama, recently named Time's magazine Person of the Year, was pictured goofing around with a young visitor dressed as Spiderman. A bank robber walked into a NatWest branch in Salford, Manchester, and handed the cashier a scrawled note. Terrified, the cashier handed over more than £2,000 although there was no sign of a weapon. Police are appealing for information regarding the suspect (SWNS)
