X Factor week three: our verdict

Johnny Robinson got Twitter all aflutter with his amazing performance of The Darkness' 'I Believe In A Thing Called Love.' Tulisa called him the 'rock star of the night,' Kelly described him as her 'guilty pleasure' and he even won Gary over. Johnny's retorts to Mr Barlow's taunts are awesome too. Gary: Where'd you get that suit, Argos? Johnny: No Gary, your wardrobe. VERDICT: entertaining.

Sophie Habibis' ballad version of 'Living On A Prayer' was out of tune in too many places. We really like her, but we're predicting bottom two status after another weak week. VERDICT: in the danger zone.

Frankie Cocozza needed to bring it this week after being in the bottom two. He certainly had the swagger for 'Get Your Rocks Off' and it was even in tune. Tulisa thought he was too extreme and being made into a 'younger Gary,' but Kelly like his prescence. The indulgent entrance, the dancers, it all worked with his reputation. VERDICT: the naughty one is back on form.

Kitty Brucknell had crazy make-up. She had fire. She had Madonna's hair. But her performance of 'Live And Let Die' fell down with too many bum notes, even though there were moments of greatness shining through. Gary called her creative and innovative. VERDICT: did the good outweigh the bad, or vice versa?

Louis Walsh did Sami Brookes a disservice giving her Cher's 'Turn Back Time': it hardly did anything to dispel Gary's concern about her being cruise ship. He called her 'boring' and 'karaoke' and made a swipe at Louis that he makes bad acts even worse. Ouch. VERDICT: could be in trouble.

Tulisa missed the point of 'rock week' and Rhythmix's mash-up of Ke$ha's 'Tik Tok' with Salt n Pepa's 'Push It' was hardly on theme, but the girls did bring some much needed energy to the show and did a fair enough job. VERDICT: they're gelling more and more.

Janet Devlin's HUGE hair was a bit of a distraction from her Janet-style 'Sweet Child Of Mine,' but we concentrated enough to know that it was in tune and as Janet said, she put her own 'vibe' on it. As Tulisa pointed out, it was hardly very rocky, but we say at least Janet knows who she is. Which is something. VERDICT: her fans will love it.

Craig Colton can sing, there's no question about that, but he didn't do much with Oasis' 'Stop Crying Your Heart Out' and we were bored. VERDICT: could do better.

Misha B gave the best performance of the night with her powerful rendition of 'Purple Rain.' Tulisa called her the 'star of the show' BUT both Tulisa and Louis accused Misha of bullying other contestants backstage, causing a ruckus with Gary and Kelly. Dramas! VERDICT: amazing voice, troubling backstage stories.

Marcus Collins gave good dance to 'Are You Gonna Go My Way' but the vocals were just OK. On a side note, his tight trousers weren't doing it for us. VERDICT: we're on the fence with this one: what do you think?

The Risk wowed last week, and although they didn't live up to our expectations this week they're still blatantly one of the best acts in the competition. Even with Ashley's laryngitis. VERDICT: even when they're not at the top of their game, they're still good.

We get it, Gary Barlow is the new Mr Nasty a la Simon Cowell. Sometimes it's amusing. But this week Gary was just too mean in our book, letting rip at Sami, contradicting himself about whether the backstage scandal should stay behind the scenes, and hurling insults at judges and acts alike. VERDICT: bring back the funny one-liners and leave the spite at the stage door, please.

We have a confession to make: Tulisa Contostavlos is our favourite judge. Yes, we know she looks like she's been tangoed. We don't care. She stuck up for her acts, gave interesting comments, and rocked out to the music. We don't even care that she totally missed the point of 'rock week.' VERDICT: she rocks.

Louis Walsh didn't do it for us this week. We wouldn't go as far as Gary, who said Louis makes bad acts even worse. But he did give shocking song choices to his clearly flummoxed artistes. He's also sniping a bit too much. VERDICT: sort your song choices out, mister.

Kelly Rowland gives pretty considered comments, and although she's clearly biased, we do respect her opinion. She also brings some fun to proceedings with her Louis spats. VERDICT: keep keeping it real Miss Rowland.
