You don’t need to be a millionaire to collect art. The capital’s art fairs and graduate shows offer the chance for Londoners to develop their eye, discover new styles and kick-start their collection at a modest price. The trick is knowing where to look.

Nicky Wheeler, director of the Affordable Art Fair, shares her tips on how to invest in the world of contemporary art.

Where do you start with an art collection?

A good way to start is to start small. As with most commodities in life, the bigger it is, the more expensive it will be. Smaller artworks make for the perfect beginning to any collection. Not only are the price tags more modest, but being able to buy more lets you explore your tastes and experiment with different artists and different artworks. But don’t be tempted to rush a collection. Take time to build an incredible collection, as opposed to simply a large one.

How do you know what is a good price and what is over-priced?

As long as you have a sense of what you can afford and you pick pieces that you connect with, then you can’t go far wrong. Art should be an emotional experience, so the biggest mistake you could make is buying something you don’t love. If you’re just starting out buying art and your pockets are not too deep, consider original prints, such as screenprints and etchings, which are a great entry-level option.

Why are art fairs such a good place to buy?

Going to see as much art as you possibly can is a great way to develop your eye. Visit art fairs museums, galleries and any other arty happenings you come across. And speak to people! Pick the brains of the gallery owners who can give a personal insight into the piece of work and strengthen your understanding of the meaning and processes that went into making it. You could also follow the careers of artists you like by subscribing to gallery email newsletters.

Are there any new artists in London buyers should be looking out for?

Visitors should definitely check out our annual Recent Graduates’ Exhibition at the Battersea Fair which showcases 22 of the brightest new names emerging from UK art schools. This year our curators have selected graduates from several of the prestigious London art schools including the Royal College of Art, City & Guilds, Central Saint Martins and The Slade.

There are also artists who have been inspired by London – particularly Battersea – in their work giving it a great local appeal. Highlights include Michel Ajerstejn’s photo-sculpture ‘Power’ and Herme Bellido’s screen print of ‘Battersea Power Station’. The fair has a great connection to London galleries and artists, but we also have a wealth of work from exceptional artists from across the UK and beyond.

Can you recommend some good places to buy new art alongside the Affordable Art Fair?

The great thing about buying work at an art fair is a sheer diversity of what’s on offer. With 110 galleries under one roof, and art by more than 1,100 artists, you’ll certainly be spoilt for choice! If you aren’t able to make it to the fair I’d suggest visiting some of our exhibitors in their own gallery spaces so you can really get a feel for their work and pick their brains for some expert tips – there’s a full exhibitor list on our website for you to refer to.

Is there a specific budget you think the first-time buyer should have in mind?

As long as you have a sense of what you can afford and you pick pieces that you connect with, then you can’t go far wrong. Art should be an emotional experience, so if you buy something you love and enjoying living with everyday, we think that’s a great investment! If you’re just starting out buying art and your pockets are not too deep, consider original prints, such as screen prints and etchings, which are a great entry-level option.
