Picketing LA Teachers Brave Downpour as Talks Resume

Teachers braved heavy rain outside Sun Valley High School in Los Angeles on Thursday, January 17, as picketing continued throughout the district ahead of planned negotiations between union and district representatives at City Hall.

Thursday was the fourth consecutive day of a strike organized by United Teachers Los Angeles, the union for educators in the country’s second largest school district. Teachers are demanding smaller classes sizes, greater funding for resources like nurses and counselors, and higher wages.

Only one-third of students attended classes on Wednesday due to the strike. Since Monday, the strike action had cost the district an estimated $39.1 million, according to the Los Angeles Times.
