A Romanian woman who plunged into the Thames during a terror attack on Westminster Bridge was holidaying in the capital with her fiancé.

The Romanian Embassy in London confirmed that Andreea Cristea, 29, remained in a critical condition in hospital on Thursday afternoon following the attack.

Ms Cristea, who is said to be an architect, was pulled from the Thames after jumping or falling from the bridge. She was given urgent treatment at the scene and rushed to hospital.

It is not clear whether she leapt into the water in an attempt to escape or if she was thrown from the bridge after being struck by the 4x4.

Footage showed the terrifying moment the speeding 4x4 mounts the pavement on the bridge before Ms Cristea plunges into the water.

Ms Cristea was in the capital celebrating her fiancé’s birthday, according to reports. He also sustained injuries in the attack on Wednesday afternoon.

The Romanian Embassy told BuzzFeed News that she underwent surgery last night, which was described as "successful". Her condition was being monitored.

The Embassy said her fiancé suffered a knee injury but has been discharged from hospital and that they are in contact with both their families, BuzzFeed reported.

A spokesman for the Port of London Authority, which looks after safety on the River Thames, said last night: “A female member of the public was recovered from the water near Westminster Bridge.

“She is alive but undergoing urgent medical treatment on a nearby pier. We believe she fell from the bridge.”

Four people were killed in the attack in Westminster, including the attacker and police officer Keith Palmer.

Spanish teacher Aysha Fade, who has two young children, was also among those killed, as well as US tourist Kurt Cochran.

The attacker ploughed a car into a crowd of pedestrians on the bridge before abandoning the vehicle and running towards Parliament armed with a knife.

He fatally stabbed PC Palmer to death before he was shot dead by armed police.
