The 10 bad eating habits that ‘cause half of heart-related deaths’

Nearly half of heart-related deaths are caused by just ten bad eating habits, a study has claimed.

Scientists said that not following ten dietary rules leads to thousands of deaths from heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes.

They include eating too much salt and sugar and processed meats, according to researchers from Tufts University in Massachusetts.

Scientists looked at more than 702,000 deaths in the U.S. in 2012 and found that 45 per cent were linked to ‘suboptimal consumption’ of ten types of nutrients.

The biggest culprit was salt, which contributed to 9.5 per cent of deaths, while a low intake of nuts and seeds was linked to 8.5 per cent.

The research was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
