Two million eligible people will be invited to receive a COVID-19 booster jab from the NHS this week, as the government seeks to see off a sharp rise in cases without introducing Plan B measures. Instead, Health Secretary Sajid Javid has been leading calls for people to once again get jabbed in the hope that boosting the population's immunity levels will see infections drop off. Around 7.5 million people have already been invited by text, email, and letter encouraging them to book through the National Booking Service, NHS England said.
Four migrants, three of them children, drowned on Tuesday after a boat in which they and 23 others were trying to cross from Turkey to Greece sank, the Greek coast guard said. Greece is one of the main routes into the European Union for asylum-seekers crossing from Turkey in flimsy, overcrowded rubber boats. The boat sank off the Greek island of Chios where strong winds were blowing, a coast guard statement said.
The chancellor is set to increase the national living wage to £9.50 in Wednesday's budget. It will rise by 6.6% from the current living wage of £8.91 per hour for those aged 23 and over from 1 April, which the government says will give full-time workers an extra £1,000 a year. The national living wage is what the government has called the national minimum wage for anybody above 22-years-old since 2016.
