In pictures: Greater Manchester engulfed by smoke as army called in to tackle Saddleworth Moor fire

A huge wildfire on Saddleworth Moor is continuing to rage, after it reignited on Monday night.

The huge blaze spans 3.7miles (6km) of moorland above Stalybridge and has prompted the evacuation of up to 100 homes.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) has confirmed a request for military assistance, as local residents liken the scene to the ‘apocalypse’.

Describing the need for military assistance, Greater Manchester’s assistant chief fire officer Dave Keelan said: ‘That’s for help to move high-volume pumps and to transport personnel to remote locations’.

It’s believed that the military will use chinook helicopters to move two water pumps to some of the blaze’s more remote locations.

The fire initially began on Sunday night, but reignited on Monday during the hot weather and then spread throughout the following day, boosted by evening winds.

Although 150 people were forced to leave their homes on Tuesday, many have since returned.
