Ahead of the event, AUOB issued the rallying cry: "On Saturday, we march for independence and rally at George Square.

"Make sure to attend this national demonstration which will empower the extra-parliamentary movement, express our defiance of Westminster rule and demand for action in the Scottish Parliament.

"Be there."

The organisation said defending the NHS was a "clear and present" reason to take part in the march, and that independence is a "national health emergency".

Those taking part were urged to bring their "flags, banners, pipes and drums".
