After five years of redevelopment causing havoc to commuters, London Bridge’s £1bn renovation has finally opened in all its full glory.

Featuring five new platforms, the upgraded works will allow Cannon Street trains to resume calling at London’s busiest train station.

The final section of the new concourse opened for the first time this morning, although work will continue to complete new shops, restaurants and facilities that will open throughout the year, Network Rail said.

Thameslink services will step up to 18 trains per hour in May and 20 per hour in December, with the full increase to 24 per hour not reached until December 2019.

Network Rail chief executive Mark Carne said: ‘The opening of our landmark station is a shining example of the investment we are making in the railway.

‘I would like to thank passengers for their patience while we transformed London Bridge into the modern transport hub it is today, with more trains to more destinations, connecting north-south London and beyond.’
