With the recent dusting of snow, the Echo looks back at when we enjoyed a proper covering.

The weather experts said the Arctic conditions came direct from Siberia as the United Kingdom lay buried under a blanket of brilliant white.

On January 2, 1979, these pictures were taken in Lyndhurst of kids and adults enjoying the deep snow that blew in with the New Year.

The thick powder came down just less than two decades after the country was hit by The Big Freeze and was the 28th coldest spell since records began.
