The picturesque Essex woodland so pretty it looks like it belongs on a postcard
Nestled in some woods just one mile south of Colchester, there is a National Trust site so beautiful and full of life that would would not believe that it is close to a city. Bourne Valley Local Wildlife Site is a woodland and wetland site covering 15 acres, sandwiched between the residential areas of Mersea Road and Old Heath Road, but is home to much more than just wildlife - it hides a Elizabethan fishing lodge!
Just a mile south of Colchester sits Bourne Mill, a grade 1-listed building steeped in history. It was built as a fishing lodge in 1591, converted to a fulling mill around 1640 and then converted to a corn mill in about 1840, which continued working until the 1930s.
The mill still has a working waterwheel, and the grounds give plenty of scope for family fun and education. Heritage Open Days mean that you can even have guided tours of the building, which truly makes visitors feel like they have stepped back in time.

Now, the mill and its surrounding woodland is a haven for wildlife and locals looking for a serene strill. Bourne Mill is set in tranquil grounds, next to a millpond and babbling stream.
The large shallow, former mill pond (Blythe Pond) is surrounded long flourishing grass which provides cover for juvenile toads and frogs. Four species of bat are also known to feed over the pond, but you will have to visit later on in the day if you would like to catch a glimpse of these beautiful creatures.
The pond is also an important local breeding site for waterfowl and amphibians, and has plenty of species of pretty coloured fish. The wildlife and Bourne Mill itself make for a gorgeous autumnal stroll as the leaves turn orange and fall.
Complete with an easy access trail on raised level boardwalk - linking Mersea Road and Old Heath Road - this is a perfect place for a educational walk with plenty to see. It is definitely one of Essex's hidden gems, but is so close to Colchester city centre that it is surprising that not more people know about it.
