Piers Morgan attempts to humiliate Love Island star - but watch how joke backfires

Piers Morgan assumed it would be easy to humiliate one of the sentient haircuts on ITV's Love Island, but a live TV stand-off resulted in the Good Morning Britain co-host getting his just desserts.

While grumpily sitting in on an interview with Love Island's Jonny Mitchell, Morgan first complained about Susanna Reid's declaration that the reality smash is the biggest show on television.

"It's nowhere near the most popular show in the country," Morgan sneered. "It's about a tenth as popular as Coronation Street."

While Reid went on to ask for Mitchell's reaction to the latest happenings on the island, Morgan was quick to interrupt, launching into a sort of University Challenge for the Awful, bombarding the TV contestant with trivia questions in an attempt to prove his lack of smarts.

"Jonny, what's 11 times 15?" Morgan asked.

"Maths isn't my strong point, so don't put me on the spot," Mitchell deflected, before being asked by a persistent Morgan to take a guess. Once Mitchell guessed 160, Morgan replied "Not bad, it's 165," and immediately asked a follow-up.

"Who is the Chancellor of Germany?" Morgan enquired. Despite Mitchell's attempts to change the subject, Morgan persisted. "They're the most powerful person in European politics," he said.

While Mitchell eventually answered "Angela Merkel", soliciting a patronising "Well done, mate" from Morgan, he wasn't prepared for the next query ("Can you give me pi to three decimal places?") and declined to answer, proving once and for all that Piers Morgan is ultimately the bigger, smarter man.

Despite the grilling, Mitchell ended up getting the last laugh, telling Morgan that Love Island is ultimately meant for people far younger than himself.

"It makes good TV - lighten up a bit, Piers. I feel like it's just entertainment really. It's not everyone's cup of tea, mate. Obviously."
