ITV's gripping 'Crime & Punishment' season concluded this evening (November 16), as Piers Morgan captivated viewers with his interview with serial killer Mark Riebe.

Moving on from his Killer Women series, Piers visited Riebe, believed to be one of America's most prolific serial killers – despite only being convicted for one murder.

Riebe, who's served 21 years for the murder of Donna Callahan, confessed to killing 13 women while in prison only to then retract those confessions.

As Piers grilled Riebe on his alleged 13 victims and tried to understand why he had falsely confessed to the murders to the police and his family, things got visibly uncomfortable.

Yesterday, Piers explained to Good Morning Britain that he had deliberately 'provoked' Riebe while interviewing him in order to "see how he reacted".

"You see these flashes of where he suddenly starts to go and that is the flash that used to trigger him, the police believe," he said.

"He would then literally snatch women whether it would be in a department store or on the street; these vulnerable women aged between 15 and 35 that he would then kill."

Live-tweeting the show, Piers told fans that he believed Riebe was guilty of killing 13 women – "and probably many more".

As ever, fans found the programme completely chilling but addictive watching, although they were a little disappointed not to see Louis Theroux asking the questions, if we're honest.

While some praised Piers for his "riveting" conversation and bravery, others lamented that Piers was nothing like Theroux.

"Bulldozing in, getting defensive responses compared to Theroux's tactile friendly start, then boom hit them with the big juicy question," one wrote.

Now that sounds like a premise for a tag-team documentary if ever there was one. Louis, Piers – up for a collaboration?

Serial Killer with Piers Morgan aired on ITV as part of the channel's 'Crime & Punishment' season.
