Piers Morgan has sent a message of support to his Good Morning Britain colleague Kate Garraway, after seeing her emotional appearance during the last Clap For Carers.

Kate’s husband Derek Draper is continuing to fight coronavirus in hospital, after being admitted in April.

The presenter was pictured outside her home with her two children Darcey, 14, and son Billy, 10, taking part in the national round of applause for the pandemic’s front line workers on Thursday night.

“This breaks my heart,” Piers said, tweeting a story from the Daily Mail. “Few happier, more positive people than @kategarraway. Or a more loyal, decent friend & colleague.

“So many families like hers going through so much unimaginable anguish in this crisis. Sending all my love to Kate & continuing to root for Derek.”

Kate also shared her own post on Instagram of her family clapping for carers, and said she had “felt the tears coming” after hearing that it was set to be the last time the nation takes to its doorsteps

“It’s been such a source of weekly comfort for them & me & I must admit I felt the tears come tonight to think it’s coming to an end while our fear for Derek goes on,” she said.

“But even if we don’t clap next Thursday it won’t diminish my eternal thanks to all in the #nhs . They are keeping Derek alive & everyone of them is fighting as hard as Derek is to give us the chance to be reunited. Hope has to keep us all going doesn’t it?”

Kate added that she was “having to find new ways of staying strong everyday” for her children because she knows “Derek would want me to”.

“It’s not easy but when I think of how hard Derek is fighting & the bravery of all in the #nhs it helps,” she said.

Thanking fans for their support, she added: “Standing together & learning from each other has to get us all through.”
