Piers Morgan has announced that he and Susanna Reid will be taking a summer break from Good Morning Britain from next week.

Morgan shared the news during Monday morning’s episode of GMB, revealing they will be checking in with their colleague Kate Garraway before taking a break.

“We’re going to talk to Kate on Wednesday before we go off for the summer and I’m sure she’ll have something to say about this,” Morgan said, referring to reports on Garraway's husband Derek Draper waking up from a coma.

Morgan and Reid usually take six weeks off around July and a GMB spokesperson told Express the duo will return in early September.

Morgan revealed their break while updating viewers on Draper’s condition.

While Draper has shown signs of improvement, Morgan clarified that it may not yet be good news, saying: “It’s probably not quite a positive story as the papers perhaps believe.”

Draper has woken up from a coma after battling coronavirus since March, but Morgan said: “It’s certainly premature to think Derek is in any way out of the woods, sadly. He remains in a critical condition.”

He continued: “So we just have a little clarification from Kate’s representative saying, ‘These headlines may excite a level of optimism that may not yet be justified.

“We hope, as does Kate, that there will be more evidence of a recovery but it will be a very slow and uncertain path.'”

It is not yet known who will fill in for Morgan and Reid while they take time off.

They last took a break in May to coincide with the school half-term break.
