Piers Morgan leads tributes to 'truly great Briton' Prince Philip

Piers Morgan has led celebrities in paying tribute after the death of Prince Philip, calling him “a truly great Briton”.

The Royal Family announced on Friday that the 99-year-old had “passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle”.

The Prince had recently returned home after spending a month in hospital where he underwent a heart procedure.

Morgan was among those to share his condolences on Twitter, writing: “RIP Prince Philip, 99.

"A truly great Briton who dedicated his life to selfless public duty & was an absolute rock of devoted support to Her Majesty, The Queen, as the longest-serving royal consort to any British sovereign.

"A very sad day for our country."

The Apprentice star Lord Alan Sugar echoed the sentiments, tweeting that he was sad to hear the news, sharing his condolences in a follow up post.

Former Spice Girl Geri Horner, who met the Duke on many public occasions, shared that she was thinking of the Queen after hearing the news.

Presenter Floella Benjamin tweeted: “Sad to hear Prince Philip has died just short of his 100th birthday.

"He was always kind and supportive to me on many occasions.”

Presenter Eamonn Holmes tweeted “RIP” and his fellow This Morning star Alison Hammond said: “Our thoughts are with the Queen and family!!”

Singer and actor Elaine Paige said it was "such terribly sad news for Great Britain, the Commonwealth & the World".

She tweeted: "My deepest condolences to HM Queen Elizabeth II, who has lost her husband, confidant & life partner and to his children, grandchildren & all of the royal family.

"HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh RIP."
