Piers Morgan and his wife Celia Walden have said they were burgled while on holiday.

The Good Morning Britain presenter and his wife were holidaying in the luxurious Côte d'Azur in the South of France when the burglary reportedly took place, just days before they were due to travel back to the UK.

Writing for The Telegraph, Celia recounted the ordeal, explaining how she woke up at 6.15 am to find her handbag "upside-down on the sofa" and her jewellery box "lying empty beside it".

"I was the first up, but the air felt different, as though something or someone fast-moving and violent had passed through it," Celia wrote.

"It felt like a room that had only recently been vacated." Celia then clarifies that French police estimated that the burglars had left only 15 minutes before after hearing her alarm go off.

Among the property stolen was "all the cash they could find" and an art deco ring Piers gifted Celia as a fifth wedding anniversary present.

Celia added: "I felt a stomach-plummeting sense of violation at the actions of these depraved and despicable inhuman beings." She added that she felt "sick" realising "the up-turned handbag found in the sitting room had originally been on a chair in our bedroom. They must have crept in there and stood inches away from us while we slept."

The couple reported the incident to the French police.

"After all the stories I've heard over the past few days from neighbours and friends who have been burgled in that same area, I feel grateful that we got off as lightly as we did," Celia added.

The burglary follows Piers injuring his leg while holidaying in Saint Tropez last month.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays on ITV.
