Thousands of viewers tuned into the National Television Awards tonight (January 23) only to hear some dreadful news: Dermot O'Leary had been replaced as host by none other than Piers Morgan!

Thankfully it was all just part of a comedy sketch that also combined 24 Hours in A&E and Doctor Foster.

In the sketch, Dermot was in hospital having mysteriously lost his voice (although Suranne Jones wasn't convinced he was telling the truth) and NTA producers were on the phone saying that with a minute to go until showtime, they had lined up a loud-mouthed replacement...

The thought of being replaced by Piers shocked Dermot back into speaking (with a giant 'NOOOOOOOOOOOOO') and he dashed backstage to yank the Good Morning Britain host away before he had a chance to offend everyone.

Things then got properly going with a performance from The X Factor 2017 winners Rak-Su.

Ahead of the celebrations tonight, Dermot opened up about the on-screen gaffe that caused Olly Murs and Caroline Flack to lose their presenting jobs on the popular music show.
