Pigeons will stay away from your garden with one plant they 'deem unbearable'
Pigeons are drawn to areas that offer them shelter and food, which is why they're often found in gardens. However, they can quickly become a nuisance due to their tendency to gather in large numbers, leading to driveways and cars being covered in droppings.
Additionally, while the sound of pigeons cooing can be pleasant, a large group can create quite a racket, especially when startled into flight. Gardeners may also find that pigeons cause damage to certain plants.
Although not typically considered garden pests, they are capable of stripping a garden bare of young plants and fruit. Fortunately, pest control expert Zack DeAngelis of Pest Pointers has revealed a plant that pigeons seem to "hate" - garlic.
According to Zack, pigeons "absolutely hate" garlic plants due to their strong smell and taste. He explained: "Since garlic has such a strong aroma and taste, it is deemed unbearable by a bird, and they will stay far away from it."
Planting garlic bulbs around your garden, particularly in areas frequented by pigeons, like around trees or flowers they enjoy, will "keep them away from those plants and, away from your space altogether", reports the Express.
Onion plants are also a big turn-off for pigeons, as they produce a smell that's particularly offensive to them and will "surely stay away from".
Zack advised: "If you have a vegetable garden or vegetables that keep getting eaten by the birds, adding onion plants into your outdoor space will not only give you a great food source but will keep pigeons far, far away."
Citronella, with its fresh and lemony aroma, is another plant that pigeons dislike. It can mask other smells that attract these birds, helping to deter them.
Derived from lemongrass plants, citronella is commonly available in oil form, but all forms are equally effective as repellents.
To utilise it, position lemongrass around your garden as a barrier. This natural deterrent will also infuse your outdoor area with a pleasant fragrance.
