Eddie Murphy is being lined up to play the role of Inspector Clouseau in MGM's upcoming Pink Panther reboot.

The film will be directed by Sonic the Hedgehog's Jeff Fowler, with Chris Bremner writing the script. Dan Lin, Jonathan Eirich, Larry Mirisch and Julie Andrews will produce.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the revival will combine live-action and CGI, following Murphy’s Clouseau as he teams up with the Pink Panther for the first time on the big-screen.

The film was first announced back in 2020, when it was teased that this Clouseau would be a "smooth-operating" inspector, as opposed to the bumbling character depicted in the original films.

The first 1963 Pink Panther film, which was co-written and directed by Julie Andrews' late husband Blake Edwards, starred Peter Sellers as Inspector Clouseau.

'Pink Panther' was originally the name of a diamond featuring in the film, but the cartoon panther that appeared in the opening credits became a star in its own right and inspired a popular cartoon series.

Sellers went on to star in four more Pink Panther films, while Roger Moore played Clouseau in the 1983 film Curse of the Pink Panther. Two more reboots came in 2006 and 2009 with Steve Martin in the lead role.

Earlier this year, Murphy revealed that he'd be more than happy to reprise his fan-favourite role as Donkey in either a fifth Shrek film – which is currently being developed – or his own spinoff, should DreamWorks want him to.

"I’d absolutely be open if they ever came with another Shrek, I’d do it in two seconds. I love Donkey," he said.

"You know, they did Puss in Boots movies. I was like, 'They should have did a Donkey movie. Donkey is funnier than Puss in Boots. I mean, I love Puss in Boots, but he ain’t funny as the Donkey'."
