With every new year comes new trends - some good and some bad. Take 2017 for example - we had the rise of solo travel but then we also had the resurgence of 'jorts' (that's denim shorts).

Thankfully, 2018 is set to look overwhelmingly positive.

Pinterest has released its top 100 trend predictions for next year and while there are some we're not sure we'll get on board with (read: fashionable fences), there are plenty we will.

From a new way to get your caffeine fix to re-imagining the desert - these are the ones we’re most excited about.

“Super” Coffee

When a trend basically means we could be experiencing something we do every morning (aka getting a caffeine fix) differently, we're all ears.

We’ve already had bullet coffee, but it looks like we could be trading our two tablespoons of unsalted, grass-fed butter and XCT for plant food.

In the last year, Pinterest has seen searches for “healthy coffee” rise by 218 per cent and it’s all to do with powders. People are looking to mix protein powder, or superfoods like maca, into their morning brew as a quicker supplement hit than making a juice or smoothie from scratch before the commute.

Statement Ceilings

Forget statement walls and look to the ceiling. Searches for “statement ceilings” are up 310 per cent this year and we can see why.

An inventive way to transform a room from the top down - people are keeping the walls one colour but then wallpapering, tiling or painting the ceiling to make it the room's standout feature. It's simple to implement and a statement that is a little more subtle.

The New Neutral

Sage is slated to be the new neutral. Replacing the likes of white, beige and stone - the muted green with grey undertones is certainly more bold than others but it's an approachable colour.

Paired with woods and a cream colour palette, the green will both soften and warm any space. If you want a bit more drama, introduce varying fabrics and add black and dark green accents to the room.

Desert Escapes

It looks like we could be trading our city breaks and beach holidays for desert destinations. Saves for “desert travel” are up 125 per cent and people are looking to the likes of Morocco, Dubai, Atacama Desert and Joshua Tree to get their arid fix. Largely unpeopled and sprawling, there are fewer ways to really understand the vastness of the world than finding yourself in the middle of the desert and the good news is you no longer have to sleep rough of pray for an oasis the next day. The luxury travel industry is catching on and you can already glamp in the likes of Antarctica (yes, it’s a desert) and The Sahara.

Living la vida local

Previously you may have visited a place because your cousin went last year and said it was great but this year, you’ll be looking to get your teeth into creating your own, totally original itinerary. Travellers want authentic experiences and neighbourhoods to discover instead of tourist hotspots and step-by-step guides.
