If you’re already well into the festive spirit, then you’re not alone. Pinterest reports that more than 62 million people have headed to the image-sharing site since the summer in search of festive ideas.

And over 200 million boards have been created around festive holiday planning, so if you’re in need of some inspiration for the Christmas period, be it decorations, cocktails or canapés, you know where to look.

Here are some of the top trending Christmas ideas among pinners this year, according to its 2018 report:

Other than the obvious things like fairy lights, some of the more unusual decoration searches on Pinterest this year are for "asymmetrical wreaths". They're basically the same as regular Christmas wreaths, with a section left uncovered, the effect is a stylish interiors statement.

Pinners were also seeking out "layered font door mats", which might sound odd but searches are up 2,869% for them this year so they're probably worth knowing about. To get the look you simply layer a smaller grassy doormat on top of a larger checked or striped rug, inspired.

Other cute ideas include "leaf place cards" delicately decorated with gold pen or wrapped around glasses – getting creative this crimbo needn't be expensive. Another top trend was "zero waste gift wrapping" ideas, which we can definitely get down with. Think cloth or brown paper bags instead of yards and yards disposable wrapping paper.

Rather than sticking to the usual suspects like mulled wine and fizz, why not whiz up some festive-themed cocktails en masse? Searches for batch cocktails are up this year, some of the most popular being "vegan eggnog" or "vegnogg" because nothing says Christmas like eggnog. Recipes typically combine non-dairy milks like cashew, almond or coconut with vanilla and nutmeg.

If you're after something fruity with a few bubbles then why not try the pomegranate rosemary prosecco which has seen a surge in saves this year, or if you want a refreshing take on a classic, go for cranberry whiskey sours, and finally, to cater to the teetotallers, alcohol free sugar plum punch. Sorted.

If you're throwing a festive dinner party or are hosting people for Christmas day this year you'll have probably started planning your main menu, but keeping your guests fed while they're waiting is just as important, especially if your timings slip off.

According to Pinterest, searches for party appetizers are on the rise, and you can forget smoked salmon blinis, this year pinners are after creative finger food like spiced pear and pomegranate crostini, cranberry brie bites, cauliflower kugel bites (a take on the traditional Jewish dish), cranberry orange meatballs and for non-meat eaters, vegan stuffed mushrooms.
