Yahoo News New Pirelli 2018 calendar features first all-black cast
The Pirelli Calendar 2018 has been revealed – and it features an all-black cast for the first time.
Photographer Tim Walker and incoming British Vogue editor Edward Enninful have joined forces to reimagine scenes from Alice in Wonderland with black influencers at the forefront in key roles.
"For two or three years, I've had this ambition to tell Alice with an all-black cast," Walker said. "I got fascinated with that idea because it's never been done.
"Pirelli came to me and said, 'We want you to be you', and they allowed me to tell the story exactly how I wanted to tell it."
He added: "It's never been done before. Alice has never been told like this."
The new calendar features Ru Paul as the Queen of Hearts, Whoopi Goldberg as The Royal Duchess, as well as Naomi Campbell and P Diddy as The Royal Beheaders.
Model Thando Hopa, who plays the Princess of Hearts, said: "This is an important step in culture development – to push images that aren't generic, that don't conform to stereotypes."
Alice in Wonderland has long lent a hand of inspiration to surrealistic interpretations – most recently, Tim Burton's film adaptation starring Johnny Depp as The Mad Hatter, Anne Hathaway as the White Queen and Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen.
