A pitch-black bridge near Leigh station where multiple people have had accidents is to receive lighting repairs to resolve issues.

The New Road bridge, due to faulty lighting, is completely blacked-out and difficult to use and has been branded an "accident waiting to happen" by residents, with a number of incidents reported on the bridge to Old Leigh.

The lighting on the bridge is maintained by UK Power Network.

A UK Power Network spokesman said: "The lighting problem on the footbridge in New Road, Leigh, was reported to UK Power Networks by the local authority on October 30th  2023.

"This could not be fixed immediately as a road closure was required in order to safely repair the lights.

"The road closure and works will go ahead on Thursday 7 December, near the junction with Hadleigh Road. It will reopen on Friday 8th December," the spokesman said.
