Plane Flies Through Spectacular Sydney Lightning Storm

A strong lightning storm in Sydney on February 18 made for a dramatic backdrop for a passenger plane as it crossed the city, with this footage captured from the suburb of Lilyfield

Brendan Bradford began recorded after he noticed the lightning start. “I’m pretty sure planes get hit by lightning fairly regularly,” he told Storyful, “but not on that scale. It was definitely a little worrying – I wouldn’t have dealt well with being on the plane.”

Things were pretty hairy on the ground, too. The Bureau of Meteorology warned road users of “dangerous driving conditions” on February 18, coupled with high winds of up to 111 km/h.

Another Twitter user, Paul Davies, was in a plane over Sydney around the same time Bradford was recording. He said the experience was “not much fun.” Davies added that the captain came on and said “That’s the biggest light show I’ve ever seen in my career.” Credit: Brendan Bradford via Storyful
