A garage and workshop on the outskirts of Edinburgh could be demolished for block of 39 'small' flats.

TRI Scotland has submitted a planning permission in principle application for the demolition of an existing car garage and repair workshop for a three-storey block of flats with a fourth storey centrally.

The accommodation would consist of 35 small studio flats and four one-bedroom units, all to be serviced apartments for short-term let use. Two of the ground floor units are proposed to be designated for uses other than residential.

One of them is proposed to be a waiting lounge with associated reception area and any required welfare facilities for the use by the members of staff servicing the proposed apartments.

The site in question is located adjacent to Burdiehouse Road just 400 metres from the Straiton junction on the Edinburgh City Bypass. The existing car garage and workshop has reportedly been in operation for over 60 years as the owner wishes to retire.

In 2009 permission was approved for a 48-bedroom hotel with a restaurant and bar. However, the development was subsequently amended to a full residential project which has now been built.
