Ubisoft has announced a 'free weekend' for its online shooter The Division, which begins today... because Thursday is officially the new Friday.

The Division drops players in a post-apocalyptic New York City after the world's population has suffered a particularly nasty case of the sniffles.

It was a commercial success when released early last year, taking around £256 million in its first week, but Ubisoft is now looking to top up its active users.

The free weekend is now active on Xbox One and PS4. PC users will have to wait until 5pm BST when the game also becomes temporarily free to play on Windows.

Global trial periods vary, as seen in the handy map below from Ubisoft.

If you've already participated in The Division's standard trial outside of this special event – which only lasts six hours of play or until users reach level 8 – you can still take part in the free weekend.

There are no level or time limits during the free weekend, which seems to grant players access to the full game. All progress carries over for players who purchase The Division.

Those who go on to buy the game will also enjoy a discount of up to 65%.

PC players should click here to get going. Those using an Xbox One or PS4 should check the Games With Gold section or PS Store.
