Sony has finally announced the release of its latest console – and not everyone is happy.

The electronics company took to social media yesterday (September 10) and unveiled its PlayStation 5 Pro, which boasts "larger GPU, advanced ray tracing, AI-driven upscaling and PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution".

However, the device lacks one thing – a disc drive. Now that games can be bought and downloaded from the internet, more and more of us are purchasing our latest obsession online rather than instore.

But the lack of disc drive means physical games purchased by owners of the regular PlayStation 5 will not be able to be used on the Pro. There will also be no backwards compatibility for games on Sony's previous generation consoles.

"Pass!" one person fumed. "Stop trying to kill physical media. Xbox tried this and there was an uproar, learn from their mistake. If you buy a game and can’t sell it, it holds no monetary value."

"Sony, just include the disc drive," one X (formerly Twitter) user responded. "It will help a lot of physical disc users." A third penned angrily: "You have missed the mark here by a flipping mile! No backwards compatibility, no stand, no disc drive! For that price point, not only no, but hell no."

Whilst a fourth game hit out: "NO disc drive... NO SALE for the PS5 Pro. The only reason I buy consoles in the first place is to own physical media. YOU can't take away my physical media, I own them, and they’re mine to keep."

The PS5 Pro has been scheduled for release on November 7 in the UK at an eye-watering cost of £699.99, whilst pre-orders will begin on September 26. Branded "the most visually impressive way to play video games" the new 8K-visual console boasts a graphics processing unit which is 67% more powerful that the current PS5.

A statement from Sony read: "Our PS5 journey would not be possible without the millions of players that have supported us through the years and have shared with us their love of gaming. Whichever console option players choose, whether it’s PS5 or PS5 Pro, we wish to bring everyone the very best gaming experience that fits their needs."
