Team photos always used to be taken a few days before the start of the football season, but not any more. That is at least in part because the summer transfer window means squads can change - sometimes quite radically - in the final few days of August after several games have already been played.

So it was earlier this week that Plymouth Argyle had their team photo for the 2024/25 season - the first with England legend Wayne Rooney as their head coach - on the pitch at Home Park, with the Mayflower Grandstand as the backdrop.

It illustrated the large size of the Pilgrims' squad with 29 players, including four goalkeepers, with the long-term injured Conor Hazard among them. There were also a large number of support staff - 16 in total - present, some of them well known to the Green Army, some not so much.

The significantly increased number of support staff compared to years gone by gives an indication of how much commitment has been made by the club to making sure the Argyle players are as best prepared for games, physically and mentally, as possible.
