Plymouth city centre loos in 'disgusting state'

The Plymouth city centre toilets next to the sundial on Armada Way have been slammed as being in a filthy state. One man who recently used them said the uncleanliness has been a “continuous trend” lately.

Plymouth City Council have apologised for the grubby loos, which they say has been down to a shortage of cleaning staff. The person using them said they’ve been left in a “disgusting state” at least once a week - since the old toilet cleaner left for another job.

The three toilets at ground level are accessible to people with disabilities and two include baby changing facilities. But recent pictures taken by a member of the public show dirty floors, unsanitary loos and even what looks like faeces on the walls.

The anonymous member of the public said: “Unfortunately this isn't the worst I've witnessed. I've seen bodily fluids all over the floor, toilets flooded over the top of the bowl and dirty water leaking out of the door. Something needs to be done, complaining doesn't seem to do nothing either. This seems to be a continuous trend lately. It's been like this at least once a week now since the old toilet cleaner left for another job.”

A spokesperson at Plymouth City Council said: “We are sorry that some people have experienced problems with the cleanliness of the disabled toilets on Armada Way recently, which has been due to staff shortages. We are employing new staff to resolve these issues as soon as possible.”

The three cubicles reported to be unsanitary are at ground level on Armada Way and require a RADAR key for access. The Armada Way (Underground) toilets are not reported to have any issues, they cost 50p to use. Both the underground and the ground level loos are open from 8am to 6pm Monday to Sunday.
