Shoplifters were among the array of offenders who appeared before magistrates in Plymouth recently. Items stolen included meats, alcohol, laundry items, ice cream and fragrances but there was one item which may have brought a wry smile to the faces of those who have sat in judgement at Plymouth Magistrates Court recently.

One Plymouth shoplifter felt the need to ignore a public space protection order, effectively banning him from a certain part of a Devon town. While there he compounded his offence by stealing a number of items, including an electric toothbrush, razors and a vibrator.

Meanwhile, one driver decided to get behind the wheel of a car having drunk of a large quantity of alcohol. The UK drink drive limit is 35 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath. The driver in question was caught with a shocking 157mg of alcohol, well over the limit by some margin. What truly shocked magistrates, who imposed a suspended sentence, was that the driver had a four-year-old child on board at the time and drove in an area where there were "many pedestrians whose lives were endangered".
