Plymouth to get new drive-in cinema airing absolute classics

Plymouth is to get a drive-in cinema offering “a starlit movie experience” at the start of next year. Classic movies including Grease and Mamma Mia! will be shown at the Drive-In Cinema, at Harpers Football Centre, Outland Road.

Seven movies will be shown over four days in late January at the former Goals Plymouth sports centre, which Plymouth Argyle FC bought last year. An announcement from the club said: “Kick off the new year with a starlit movie experience at Plymouth’s very own Drive-In Cinema, taking place at Harpers Football Centre. Gather your family, friends, and cosy blankets for three days of beloved classic and family-favourite films, all enjoyed from the comfort of your car.”

The screenings are on January 24, 25, and 26 January, and the football club said: "This unique experience promises the perfect blend of nostalgia and modern fun. Pack your snacks or indulge in delicious treats from our onsite food vendors offering everything from popcorn to hot chocolate. Whether you wish to revisit an old favourite or discover something new, this event is designed for all ages and makes for the perfect winter evening out.”

Movies will be shown on an LED screen “creating a visually stunning display that’s hard to miss”. Tickets, costing £25 per car, are limited, the club said, and can be booked now here .

The dates and films are:

  • Friday, January 24 - 7.30pm: Grease

  • Saturday, January 25 - 1.30pm : Ratatouille, 4.30pm: Kung Fu Panda, 7.30pm: Mamma Mia

  • Sunday, January 26 - 1.30pm: Up, 4.30pm: The Goonies, 7.30pm: Dirty Dancing

Gates open an hour before the film starts. Movies will be played through a speaker which will be given to cars as they arrive. Details about refreshments will be released soon.

The club said: “We monitor weather forecasts in the lead up to our events and should there ever be any concern regarding this, we will notify all ticket holders via our social media platforms.

“In the event that we need to cancel we will offer you a credit note for your ticket to use at any future screening. We are not able to offer refunds.”

The films are being shown in association with Cornwall-based Skylight Cinema which has been providing outdoor cinema hire for a decade. The business has attended more than 2,500 events in this time. The company’s website said: “Outdoor events are a great way to bring communities and families together in a way that creates very special memories. We are all about creating memories.”

It added: “We’re proud to be the UK’s largest provider of mobile outdoor cinema equipment,. We provide everything you need to host a flawless drive-in movie night. This includes: inflatable screens available in various sizes, powerful projectors and crystal clear sound systems.”
