Consumer watchdog Which? has unveiled the UK's best cities and towns for a staycation in 2024. The survey involved nearly 4,000 members providing insights about their experiences of visiting various areas over the past two years.

The locations were rated out of five stars based on factors like accommodation, accessibility, food and drink, cultural sites, tourist attractions, crowd levels, and value for money and then tallied for an average customer score. Most of the South West regions ranked on this list but Plymouth respectfully placed 16th out of 25 large cities with a modest 66 per cent customer rating.

However, Liverpool stole the top spot with Edingbrugh landing in second place. Out of the 25 large cities, Swansea came in 24th and Derby placed last in the 25th spot. Plymouth's West Country neighbour Birstol ranked a respectable ninth but what made Bristol rank higher than Plymouth?

Plymouth and Bristol were both awarded 3 stars for their cultural sites for tourists to visit and two stars for ease of getting around. However, Bristol gained 4 stars for having the best food and drink and accommodation with the average hotel price costing £107 whereas Plymouth received 3 stars for food and drink and 2 stars for accommodation with the average hotel price being £89.

The coastal county was given a disappointing 2 stars for its shopping facilities whilst Bristol received 3 stars. However, Plymouth outranked its competitor by receiving 3 stars for parking and 4 stars for value of money whilst Bristol received one star and 3 stars.

Bath topped the list for mid-sized cities and Wells bagged the first position in the small city category. Bath got five stars for cultural sights and tourist attractions, four for food and drink and accommodation. However, Exeter outranked its other South West competitors as Cheltenham placed 12th at 61 per cent and Gloucester in 16th at 61 per cent, whilst Truro ranked 17th at 61 per cent in the smaller city lineup beating Torquay.
