A much-loved Plymouth dad who died unexpectedly has left many in the city reeling. Steven Barnes leaves behind wife, Kayleigh Barnes and four young children - as well as numerous friends.

Steven was seen leaving the Derriford Hospital emergency department on June 3 and a police appeal was launched when he went missing. Sadly, on June 6, a body was found and Steven’s family were informed.

Described as bubbly and outgoing, Steven, who was 33, grew up in Honicknowle. As a child he attended Chaucer Way Primary School followed by John Kitto Community College.

Prior to his death, Steven climbed Snowdon mountain (Yr Wyddfa) for the second time and also raised money for charity as a MMA cage fighter.

Steven's close friend Chloe Boylan, 33, has now set up a GoFundMe fundraiser with money going towards Steven’s funeral in order to ease financial pressures on the family as they process their huge loss. Thousands have already been raised by those who knew him.

Chloe said: “His children were his everything and he loved walking his dog, Indie. He was adventurous and loved trying new things, he travelled with the fair for a few years. He was infectious, a loveable rogue always in shorts!

“He was like a brother to me and we can’t believe he’s gone. He loved music and was a huge Only Fools and Horses fan. He loved his family and friends so much, he really missed his mum who passed away in August 2021.”

Despite having mental health struggles, Steven put his energy into raising money for charities dealing with mental health and suicide awareness.

The fundraiser for the family, set up by Chloe, hopes to “ease the financial strain and worry off Kayleigh's shoulders” and raise funds to give Steven “the send off he deserves”.

Chloe said: “Following the tragic death of Steven there has been no time for his beautiful family to have been able to plan for this.”

On June 22, a fundraising event will be held in Steven's memory at The Victory Inn in Honicknowle. Anyone that knew him is welcome to attend.
