Plymouth tech firm is smashing it by employing more women
A Plymouth tech firm is creating jobs and is employing more women. In an industry that is dominated by men, IT company Acronyms now has eight women among its 31 staff.
It has just welcomed four new female starters and has plans to increase total headcount to 50 by next year. Acronyms has also just bought new premises at William Prance Road, in Derriford, which sees its office footprint more than double in size so it has plenty of room for newcomers.
New recruits in the past six months include four IT engineers, and three additions to the organisation’s sales and customer success teams, all a product of company growth. Meanwhile, the company is in talks with further education institutions across Plymouth to create new pathways into the IT industry, and as a means of keeping young talent in the region.

The company, which was founded in Plymouth in 2003 had previously spent 15 years as tenants at Plymouth Science Park. Acronyms thrived in the Science Park's technology-rich environment and during its time there expanded its regional presence by opening offices in Bristol and Bodmin through organic growth and acquisitions.
The new premises include 25 additional workstations, client meeting rooms with touch screen technology, increased communal areas for team working and EV charge points.
Today, Acronyms supports more than 200 UK-based clients including Taylor Wimpey, National Marine Aquarium, Sharp's Brewery and a number of regional law firms, having become the official IT partner of the Plymouth Law Society at the start of this year. Alongside its regional growth, it is keen to continue supporting the wider Plymouth community and do so as headline sponsors of the Acronyms Tamar 10k, as well as providing sponsorship for technology meetup Digital Plymouth and the Plymouth Youth Awards.
Managing director Dave Smith said: “This is another significant investment in our ability to service our clients across the country from our base here in the South West. The newly acquired office will enable us to continue the growth of Acronyms by attracting further talented IT professionals to the region, whilst providing exciting new opportunities in a growing sector for local young people.”
