Plymouth is a top spot for food and as the weather turns colder and the nights draw in, a tasty roast dinner is one of the best things about winter. The top five spots to get yours (according to TripAdvisor) are either dotted about the city - or perched by the sea's edge.

A traditional roast is a Sunday treat for many, and some of the popular options in and around Plymouth get fully booked way in advance. However, one top rated roast dinner is available all week long (Monday - Saturday) at any time - and it costs just £8.60.

From the Barbican to Plymouth city centre, or Plymouth Market to a nearby seaside village - these top five roasts will get you wanting to try them all.

On the Barbican there’s two different restaurants highly rated for their roast dinners, one is already renowned for their traditional afternoon teas, but they also serve one of Plymouth’s “best” roast dinners.

Tasties Cafe

Tasties Cafe in Plymouth Market is a food business owned by local man, Tony Ardis. The restaurant can be found upstairs at the indoor market - and is proudly serving “affordable” roasts.

Tony said he’s proud to be recognised on TripAdvisor as one of the top places for roast dinners in the city. One TripAdvisor post by reviewer T describes a “friendly local ambience” at Tasties and “good food at good price”.

T wrote: “Good traditional British food at a good price. Atmosphere friendly and local, and casual. I like the roast chicken with four veggies. The chicken is a half small chicken.”

The homemade roast dinner at Tasties costs £8.60 - making it one of the most affordable options in Plymouth. It always comes with four vegetables - and the customer gets a choice of beef, pork, chicken or turkey.

The Tudor Rose

The traditional roast at The Tudor Rose is £14.95 per person or you can bag two courses for £17. One reviewer on TripAdvisor wrote that this was the “best roast” he’d “had this year” and as well as meat choices, a vegetarian option is available along with a gluten free version.

He added: “Great experience today, Sunday roast ! Good portion size, well presented, plenty of veggies, nice touch to have a gravy boat to enhance the meal.”

The Sunday roast at the tea rooms is served with yummy stuffing, Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes, four different seasonal vegetables and a unique “signature” gravy. What’s more, this restaurant is set in one of the oldest buildings in Plymouth - with a charming old courtyard garden where you can also sit and eat.

The Fisherman’s Arms

Country-style pub The Fisherman’s Arms, serves delicious food in a cosy welcoming free house - including Sunday roasts. This venue is tucked away from the busy Barbican, but gets booked up well in advance.

Pauline reviewed The Fisherman’s Arms on TripAdvisor, writing: “Visit here every year, lovely cosy little pub, food excellent, Sunday roast beautiful one of the best I've ever had but make sure you book in advance, friendly staff.”

The pub is popular with locals and tourists and a roast at The Fisherman’s Arms costs £15. You can also add extras such as extra meat, cauliflower cheese or creamed leeks for a few extra pounds.

Cosmic Kitchen

Just up the road from the Barbican is vegan restaurant, Cosmic Kitchen - if you’re after a vegetarian roast dinner that's 100% plant based. One TripAdvisor review raved about the roasts at this restaurant - which also grows a few pots of its own food just outside the premises.

A review of Cosmic Kitchen’s roasts described the dinners as “incredible” leaving three “very satisfied customers” and three totally empty plates. On a nice day you can even lounge on the outdoor sofa style beds in the sun at this restaurant.

The Odd Wheel

You may wish to venture further afield to another spot right by the sea - especially if the weather is sunny. As well as highly rated roast dinners, The Odd Wheel in Wembury also has stunning sea views.

The food is described as “beautiful” and “top quality” by TripAdvisor reviewers. The hearty roasts at this pub are certainly popular, with customers also praising the friendly atmosphere at The Odd Wheel.

Reviewing a roast at The Odd Wheel on TripAdvisor Al D wrote: “From the moment my wife and I walked into the restaurant door of the pub we were made to feel welcome.

"The roast was superb, it tasted delicious and was great value for money. The staff from the manager Luke to the bar staff and waitresses were all friendly and very helpful. Nothing was too much trouble for any of them. The roast was probably one of the best we have had and we will definitely be going again.”
