A pod of dolphins was seen “bow riding” a blue whale in Dana Point, California, in a beautiful interaction a veteran whale-watcher called “rare.”

This video from boat tour agency Capt Dave’s Whale Watching, posted to YouTube on June 8, shows four bottlenose dolphins swimming at the head of the massive whale.

“Our passengers and crew experienced a rare and epic encounter with a blue whale seemingly having fun interacting with a pod of bottlenose dolphins,” the agency wrote in the caption.

Dolphins often “ride the pressure wave created in front of boats,” wrote Capt Dave’s Whale Watching. “During this sighting, however, the dolphins were ‘bow riding’ in front of a blue whale.”

Capt Dave’s Whale Watching also wrote that dolphins and whales “do not live in the same social circles and are rarely seen together, making this an especially memorable” moment. Credit: Capt. Dave’s Whale Watching via Storyful
