A man has been arrested after two toddlers who were found on a street were reunited with their family.

Suffolk Police said two girls, one aged less than a year and the other about three years old, were found on their own in Lowestoft on Monday.

The force said the girls were unharmed and were looked after at a police station nearby.

Less than an hour after police launched an appeal on its Twitter and Facebook pages, the girls were reunited with their family.

A Suffolk Police spokesman told Yahoo News UK: "The little girls have been reunited with their family at the police station after the social media appeal."

The force said later that a man in his 20s has been arrested on suspicion of neglect and is being interviewed by officers in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk.

The young children had been found at Crown Street West at about 9.30am, the force said.

In a tweet, the force had said: "Two toddlers found in Crown St West, Lowestoft, at about 9.30am.

"Both girls, aged about three and less than a year, unharmed and being looked after at police station.

"We want to reunite them with their family."

They were reunited with family within an hour of the initial appeal being put on social media.
