Fires burnt on the street and police used water cannons and tear gas to disperse crowds in Lyon on March 7 as unions and their supporters took to the streets for a sixth day of national strikes against the government’s proposed pension reforms.

Footage by Twitter user @Bismuthback shows a large trash bin on fire in the middle of a street. Chairs, benches and other projectiles can be seen being thrown at police in riot gear. The riot police are seen using tear gas and charging at the crowd. Water cannons are also used.

The local government blamed “hooded individuals” for the violence. They said the individuals committed “damage to businesses” in the city.

Police were targeted with projectiles at Place Bellecour, the local government said in a later statement. They made use “in a proportionate way” of “means to stop the action of hostile individuals,” the statement said.

Le Tribune de Lyon reported that at least 25,000 people attended the march in Lyon.
