Police have deployed 50 more officers as part of a crackdown against drug gangs, muggers and thugs targeting women in the West End.

The team will bolster the 140 who already patrol Westminster to tackle the criminals who prey on tourists and clubbers who flood into the area.

Across the capital 650 more officers are on the beat in areas identified as crime hot spots particularly in areas where girls and women have reported feeling unsafe. The extra resources are specifically being poured into areas identified as high crime ‘town centres’.

The Westminster team hit the streets around major tourist traps including Piccadilly Circus and Leicester Square this week following the announcement of extra resources across London in October. One of the main tasks of the teams will be to identify those harassing or assaulting women women following the deaths of Sarah Everard after being abducted in Clapham and teacher Sabina Nessa who was was attacked near her Greenwich home.

Borough Chief Superintendent Owain Richards said his staff had been bolstered at the right time with people heading to the West End to see the Christmas lights and enjoy the shows and attractions that pull in large crowds.

He said: “As we approach the Christmas holidays we expect to see a large number of people coming into Westminster, and specifically the West End, to shop for presents or enjoy the numerous attractions, bars and restaurants. Criminals will often take this opportunity to target people in crowded spaces, when they are distracted, and carrying a lot of shopping.

“The festive season can also, sadly, attract anti-social behaviour through drunkenness. This can also lead to inappropriate behaviour towards other party goers, this will not be tolerated.

“Harassment and assaults of women and girls is also a major issue and that will also be one of our main priorities. Drugs as well, both the selling and the using, are also high on the agenda.

“The officers, who have today joined the West End Policing Team will play a vital role in local policing by preventing and detecting crime. I would urge anyone who sees them whilst they are out patrolling to speak with them if they have any concerns. These officers are here for you, so please engage with them.”

Other areas where more officers have been drafted in include Croydon, Camden, Brent, Lewisham, Haringey and Hounslow.
