Police Fire Tear Gas at Pro-Palestine Protesters in Montreal
Police in Montreal fired pepper spray and tear gas at pro-Palestinian protesters who were marching in the city’s streets on Thursday evening, July 11, after the dismantling of an encampment at McGill University a day earlier.
The footage from @MtlProtest, an X user who documents protests in the city, shows riot police accompanying the protest march in central Montreal before a tense confrontation occurs, after which police officers fire pepper spray in protesters’ faces at close range, and fire tear gas canisters at other people as they flee.
According to The Montreal Gazette, police used loudspeakers to order the crowds to disperse and became involved in physical clashes with protesters.
“Some of them wore masks and behaved in a hostile manner,” said police spokesperson Veronique Dubuc, according to CTV News. “The police intervened and carried out dispersal maneuvers using irritant gas,” Dubuc said.
