Emergency services in Bristol have been called to the A4 Portway after a police incident was declared. Avon and Somerset Constabulary confirmed it was called to the area this afternoon (Sunday June 23) after a member of the public called 999 over concerns for someone's welfare.

The major road in and out of the city was closed for several hours while police attended and launched an investigation into the circumstances of the incident. Police also asked motorists to avoid the area and seek alternative routes.

A spokesman for the force said: "The A4 Portway is closed in both directions while emergency services respond to an incident. We received a call at approximately 2.50pm today from a member of the public. Emergency services remain at the scene and road users are advised to seek an alternative route."
